Music is a very integral part of the message, mission, and ministry at Unity Minneapolis!
From Sunday services to special events, the musical components of the congregation’s experience are chosen to complement and augment the message, theme, and focus of the service, concert or celebration.
Music Director Lori Dokken has led the Music Department for 15 years. Her vibrant and long career of more than 40 years in the music industry provides a broad palette of experience and knowledge which has guided and fueled the very diverse programming that is brought to the Unity community throughout the year.
Lori has partnered with Judi Vinar (a nationally known educator, vocalist, and director) as Unity Choir Director for these past 15 years. After growing and grounding a strong and vital choir program, Judi has turned her attention to other areas of her wide-ranging involvement in the music industry. Lori and Unity Minneapolis are excited to welcome one of Judi’s outstanding protégés, Rachel Holder, as she steps into the Unity Choir Director post for the 2023-2024 choir season. Rachel is a “first call” vocalist in the Twin Cities community as well as a private vocal instructor and sought-after educator at several of the area’s universities and private colleges.
Special guest artists for Sunday morning services include an incredible selection from the “A” list of vocalists and instrumentalists in the Twin Cities. Some of our guests over the past few years have included: Mary Jane Alm, Dave Berget, Daryl Boudreaux, Julius Collins, Ginger Commodore, Ellis Delaney, Debbie Duncan, Jendeen Forberg, Katie Gearty, Pete Hennig, Rachel Holder, Michael Monroe, Joyann Parker, T. Mychael Rambo, James Rocco, Erin Schwab, Dennis Spears, Dane Stauffer, Judi Vinar and many more!
Musical selections are chosen to showcase inspirational songs from traditional sacred selections to the inclusion of a large number of artists and composers from the past 100 years. Such as: Sister Rosetta, Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, India.Arie, Joni Mitchell, Brandi Carlile, Carole King, James Taylor, Sara Bareilles, Broadway classics and a host of others.
We also feature music that is written by some of the best-known New Thought composers like Daniel Nahmod, Karen Drucker, Michael Gott, Faith Rivera, Sara Groves and others.
The award-winning Unity Choir regularly performs in worship services during their September to May season. Choir soloists are often featured, and the choir is also joined by professional vocalists from the community. The season is sometimes capped off with a big Unity Choir concert bash in the spring,
