The title of this thought-provoking documentary refers to the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which reads “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States.”  Ava DuVernay’s documentary shares an in-depth look at the prison system in the United States and how it relates to our nation’s history of racial inequality.  Scholars, historians, activists, and politicians analyze the criminalization of African Americans and the exponential growth in the U.S. prison system.
