Rev. Phil’s Take on ‘Present Over Perfect”

Rev. Phil’s Take on ‘Present Over Perfect”

When I read “Present Over Perfect” by Shauna Niequist, I found it to be powerful and deeply healing. That said, I also think there are a few things to keep in mind in order to receive the most you can from this study. For example, the author’s  personal theology includes a relationship with an anthropomorphic God and a relationship with Jesus as “God walking on earth.”

In Unity we know God as Spirit (as Jesus did). We know that God is  not a being  (Shauna often refers to God as “He” in the book. We, too,  love Jesus – not as one who “died for our sins” or “the only Son of God”  or “God come down to earth” but as our role model, our teacher, our friend. I, too, have a personal relationship with Jesus, as did Myrtle and Charles Fillmore, our co-founders. I did not find the author’s “slightly  more traditional” view of God and religion keeping me from receiving the powerful messages in this book. I hope and trust that the same will be  true for you.

You will also see that once in a while the author suggests that we are flawed, not “spiritual beings having a human experience.” We know  better. So please also read those places with a grain of salt. There is still a great deal to receive from the message in this book.
